Presence in the Mediterranean

Presence in the Mediterranean

The regional horizon of iesMed is the Mediterranean.

The main reason for this is that the Social and Solidarity-based Economy (such as cooperatives, mutual societies, associations) already has a strong presence in the Mediterranean:On the Western coast alone you can find over 400,000 companies and organisations that generate 6 million job positions. This is also due to the fact that the setting-up of a true Mediterranean zone, a task that was helped along initially by the Barcelona process and subsequently continued by the Union for the Mediterranean, is a strategic priority for the countries situated along the Mediterranean coast.
Another reason is that the wave of democracy that has erupted in Northern Africa, which has many concerns in common with the European protest movements, also asks for a democratisation of the economy.
And finally, because SSE decisively contributes to job creation, social cohesion, and reduction of discrimination. It is an essential lever for a sustainable growth, better social services, and the creation of a relationship between the companies and the local territory, and the participation of its citizens, both men and women, in the economy. It has an essential role in the recovery on the part of the citizens of a responsible and socially-aware Mare Nostrum.

The geographical horizon of iesMed is the Mediterranean. Social and Solidarity-Based Economy already has a strong presence in this region: On the Western coast alone you can find over 400,000 companies and organisations that generate 6 million job positions.

The establishment of a true Mediterranean social and solidarity-based economy that combines, relates, multiplies, and reaffirms the professionalism and values of SSE is a strategic priority for the countries along the Mediterranean coast. The democratic wave that has erupted in Northern Africa and the growing dissatisfaction in Southern Europe also underlines a demand for economic democratisation.

Faced with this reality, iesMed and its partners work together in the Mediterranean with the aim of playing this role of uniting the existing actors in order to use the company structure of iesMed (under the form of a European cooperative) to propose innovative and alternative solutions, both at a local and at a global level.
